Health System Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience


Course Description

Development of pharmacy practice skills in a health system setting, focusing on exposure to health system medication use processes and pharmacy patient care services.

The course will meet for forty hours a week for three weeks (total of 120 contact hours).

Course Objectives

1) Demonstrate understanding of the medication use system in an institutional setting 2) Participate in medication dispensing and distribution activities 3) Describe health system pharmacy patient care services 4) Participate in delivery of patient care as part of the healthcare team 5) Demonstrate the ability to properly fill a medication order through selection of proper product, quantity, packaging, and labeling 6) Demonstrate understanding of proper aseptic technique for preparation of parenteral products 7) Demonstrate understanding of USP 797 and USP 800 compliance 8) Select appropriate sources and provide drug information services in a timely manner to the health care team 9) Display knowledge of licensing, regulatory, and accreditation procedures necessary for the operation of a health system pharmacy 10) Develop communication skills used with patients, pharmacy staff, and other healthcare professionals 11) Demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior
