Course Objectives
This course will cover the approaches to dealing with property and liability risks and the effective management of these risks with insurance. This includes understanding the application of property insurance to pure risk exposures, including direct and indirect property and the application of liability insurance to general business liability and catastrophic liability risks. The course also addresses current topics in the field of commercial property and liability insurance. This course also includes a service-learning component. Students contact an actual small business in the Athens or Atlanta area and request permission to conduct an insurance audit and risk review for the business. The students review the business’s existing insurance contracts, its risk profile, and make recommendations to the business for additions and changes to its coverage and risk management practices. This project is designed to give each student real- world experience in Risk Management and Insurance. Each student is expected to actively participate in his or her group as this project will offer some interesting insights into the industry and will provide important recommendations to the business. As a group, the students consider the specific needs of this business, its loss control and its loss financing (including a complete analysis of the insurance policies).
