Non-Traditional Format

This course will include a combination of didactic lecture hours, facilitated lab sections, simulation using standardized patients, and guided recitation. The student's time completing each type of activity will vary from week to week.

Course Objectives

• Describe the institutional medication use process • Describe the organizational structure of an institutional pharmacy • Demonstrate clinical decision making skills • Prepare parenteral products using aseptic technique • Educate patients on commonly encountered medication products • Demonstrate patient counseling skills • Choose appropriate drug references to answer drug information questions in both the institutional and community pharmacy practice settings • Determine appropriate, evidence-based medication therapy for disease states • Demonstrate physical assessment skills to assess patients • Explain tenets of teamwork in healthcare • Demonstrate leadership skills within the profession of pharmacy • Use pharmacokinetic calculations to determine appropriate drug dosing • Identify patient-specific factors that impact therapeutic recommendations • Evaluate complex medication regimens and identify medication- related problems • Develop evidence-based recommendations to resolve medication- related problems • Critically evaluate primary literature to guide clinical decision making • Define scholarship in a clinical setting • Document patient care activities using a format that follows current practice standards • Demonstrate the ability to solve complex problems • Communicate confidently and clearly • Demonstrate confidence in one’s ability to deliver patient care within the settings defined by this course • Determine patient immunization needs • Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous vaccines • Describe practice considerations, including regulatory requirements related to offering immunizations • Communicate effectively with patients during every step of the vaccination process • Communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team • Develop a care plan using evidence-based medicine and considering individual patient needs • Demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior in all activities
