Analytical Thinking
Social Awareness & Responsibility

Course Description

Description and identification of minerals and rocks. Interpretation of topographic and geological maps. Identification and interpretation of surficial and structural geologic features. Quantitative evaluation of hydrologic and environmental problems.

Athena Title

Earth Processes Environ Lab

Pre or Corequisite

GEOL 1121 or GEOL 1121H

Grading System

A - F (Traditional)

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will engage in practical exercises that reinforce key geologic concepts and processes while developing critical and analytical thinking skills.
  • Students will engage in activities that include rock and mineral identification, stratigraphic correlation, and interpretation of geologic maps to analyze Earth's history and dynamic systems. Hands-on simulations of plate tectonics, surface processes, and geohazards will provide insight into natural system interactions, encouraging students to evaluate data and draw informed conclusions.
  • Students will also conduct experiments on groundwater flow, soil contamination, and pollution mitigation, as well as assess the environmental impacts of resource extraction and waste disposal.
  • Through data analysis, field observations, and problem-solving exercises, students will strengthen their ability to assess complex environmental challenges, recognize human influences on Earth's systems, and develop solutions that promote social and environmental responsibility.
