Course Description

Discover the visual culture of France and Francophone nations through the study of graphic novels, art, photography, architecture, film, fashion, urban spaces, and/or advertisements. Taught in French.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will develop language skills in aural, oral, reading and writing French at the ACTFL Intermediate to Intermediate High level.
  • Students will acquire essential vocabulary related to the discussion of graphic novels and visual arts.
  • Students will understand concepts of visual grammar and visual syntax.
  • Students will build and share knowledge collaboratively.
  • Students will develop an awareness, knowledge and appreciation of various forms of French and/Francophone visual culture within a communicative framework.
  • Students will develop an awareness, knowledge and appreciation of various forms of French and/or Francophone visual culture through the analysis of art, media, and graphic narration.
  • Students will describe, analyze and evaluate noteworthy expressions of artistic design as they relate to political, social, cultural and historical contexts.
  • Students will contextualize encounters with visual culture through the lens of critical theory, secondary literature and/or documentary videos.
  • Students will build and share knowledge collaboratively (recognizing others as a valuable resource for analytical thought).
