Housing Management and Policy Practicum


Course Description

Supervised experiences expose students to careers in housing management and policy. Students are directed to spend time in field assignments within three diverse housing types (e.g., a housing-related nonprofit group or government agency, a private residential property management company, and a company providing specialized housing, such as a student or senior).

Non-Traditional Format

The Housing Management and Policy career practicum course will provide a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with hands-on industry employment experiences through strong partnerships. Students will apply knowledge and skills through supervised short-term experiences in various housing management and policy organizations. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the career pathways within the housing management and policy fields through the creation of a career portfolio.

Course Objectives

• Design a self-branded career portfolio that differentiates you from other candidates, articulates the value you offer in a housing career path and includes defined components (e.g., an introductory elevator pitch, professional mission statement, resume, and supporting artifacts). • Compare and contrast skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to operate at least three diverse housing product types successfully. • Recognize at least seven skills gained from academic learning, field visits, campus involvement, work and volunteer activities, and seemingly unrelated experiences that transfer to careers in housing. • Identify and interpret patterns from data points produced from multiple self-awareness assessment results. • Implement self-awareness, knowledge of housing, and interviewing skills to interview with a housing employer in a professional environment successfully.
