Reading and analysis of literary texts that have been adapted to the cinema; analysis and interpretation of strengths and weaknesses of the cinematic adaptations.

Course Objectives

To understand the advantages and the challenges confronted by screenplay writers and directors in adapting novels in the fantasy genre to the screen.


Topical Outline

Week 1 -- Exploration of the scope of fantasy as a literary genre and as a cinematic genre. Weeks 2-4 -- reading and discussion of a major fantasy novel. Week 5 -- viewing and discussion of the cinematic version of the novel studied in weeks 2-4. Week 6 -- summary discussion and examination of novel/film 1. Weeks 7-9 -- reading and discussion of a second major fantasy novel. Week 10 -- viewing and discussion of the cinematic version of the novel studied in weeks 6-8. Week 11 -- summary discussion and examination of novel/film 2. Weeks 12-14 -- reading and discussion of a third major fantasy novel. Week 15 -- viewing and discussion of the cinematic version of the novel studied in weeks 11-13. Final examination
