Course Objectives
This accelerated course is designed for students who have taken Accelerated Elementary Italian and are building from that foundation to achieve an intermediate level of Italian proficiency. It advances the student's knowledge of Italian pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and discourse to the intermediate level. Upon successful completion of this course, students should: - Engage in dialogue with classmates and instructor about situations in the past, present, and future, and use some colloquial expressions accordingly. - Read authentic material from the popular press, as well as some literary sources, and understand the main points. - Write about a cultural text that has been read and analyzed. - Understand oral narration from the instructor, from video or audio sources, and from classmates. - Know important aspects of Italian culture and be able to discuss these aspects in a comparative framework. Grades will be based on exams, compositions, homework, and aural/oral evaluation.
Topical Outline
Pronunciation - Rhythm, consonants, vowels, dipthongs stress and intonation, conversational practice. Grammar: tenses and moods (indicative, conditional, imperative, subjunctive); sequence of tenses; idiomatic expressions; passive voice; causative construction; double pronouns. Readings on Italian history and current events, rituals and customs, work, food, the environment, society, technology and science, Italian art and literature. Composition: writing practice on a variety of themes, including hobbies, past experiences, popular Italian culture, personal aspirations.
