Course Description
Applications of mathematics and statistics in biology. Topics
such as gene mapping, inference of evolutionary relationships,
epidemiological modeling, and brain imaging. Students will
conduct mini-projects on each topic. Emphasis on (1) thought
process of converting biological problems into mathematical ones,
and (2) writing computer programs to conduct analyses using real
data.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will learn about key application areas of mathematical and statistical reasoning in biology, with a strong emphasis on learning the thought process required to translate a biological problem into a mathematical/statistical problem. Students will conduct mini-projects in each area in which they will write computer programs to conduct analyses using real data.
Topical Outline
- This course will delve into various areas of biology in which mathematical and statistical techniques play a central role. Topics will vary between offerings, but may include analysis of DNA sequence data, statistical genetics, inference of evolutionary trees, epidemiological modeling, brain imaging data, and other topics.
