Course Description
Introduction to the creation of work within a design and technology context. Designed as a stepping stone to a student's own investigations, interest, and professional goals, as well as a space for exploration and experimentation with alternative design processes and methodologies.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to investigate specified
research topics within the subject matter of the course. This
will entail a thorough review of literature, analysis of major
questions to be answered, and identification of specific
research topics worthy of pursuit. This will be reported in a
written research paper. The results of this work will also be
presented in class and graded for content, analytical acuity,
and presentation quality.

Course Objectives
1. Understand the program operations and mechanics of the most current digital technology used in the apparel industry. 2. Define and appropriately use design elements and principles through various digital design techniques and skills. 3. Comprehend the technical design process (a) concept, (b) presentation, and (c) technical package using creative problem-solving and accurate specification communications. 4. Examine how to digitally build and present creative work to communicate creative skills while seeking work in the apparel and textile industry. 5. Analyze personal design direction and effectively communicate and target potential brands and/or companies for job search. 6. Cultivate the ability to work up color palettes and schemes in a variety of methods to apply to both hand and digital surface designs.
Topical Outline
1. Capturing inspiration and creative thought with current digital technology. 2. Evolving the hand-drawn fashion illustration to a digital presentation image. 3. Detailing ideas with illustrator to create flat sketches. 4. Presentation formats - inspiration, concept, and/or story boards. 5. Creating technical spec sheets for designed garments. 6. Developing textile surface designs (print/pattern) from hand to digital. 7. Digital portfolio and other self-marketing tools.
