Course Description
Students learn skills such as patternmaking, draping, sewing, and other means of garment construction in a critical and creative context. These skills are presented as creative design tools to be utilized in open, iterative processes, and as a means to realizing and executing solutions to design problems.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to investigate specified
research topics within the subject matter of the course. This
will entail a thorough review of literature, analysis of major
questions to be answered, and identification of specific research
topics worthy of pursuit. This will be reported in a written
research paper. The results of this work will also be presented
in class and graded for content, analytical acuity, and
presentation quality.

Course Objectives
1. Understand the basic concepts of sewing, draping, and patternmaking in fashion design. 2. Define and appropriately use design concepts and terminology through various design techniques and skills. 3. Comprehend the design process from concept to finished product by using creative problem-solving and innovative methods. 4. Examine the croquis form to illustrate fashion designs. 5. Analyze and effectively communicate design ideas through the use of a fashion diary, draping, patternmaking, and sewing to create a final garment product. 6. Forecast and develop design strategies to create and keep an apparel product relevant.
