Gateway Latin


Course Description

Further training in Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary acquisition in conjunction with daily translation of Latin text to improve translation skills and strengthen knowledge of the linguistic structure of the Latin language.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate their control of Latin grammar through identifying and labeling forms and by translating texts.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to translate and read passages from ancient texts in Latin, both prepared and at sight.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to describe and interpret elements of an individual author’s style as well as common ancient Latin literary techniques.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to interpret and critique ancient Roman viewpoints (cultural, social, political, religious, etc.) present in ancient Latin texts.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to formulate and develop written assessments, evaluations, and/or critiques of aspects of ancient Latin texts in a style appropriate to the field of Classics.
