East Asian Thought


Course Description

Study of major schools of East Asian philosophies. Students will read writings attributed to Confucius, Mencius, Sunzi, Zhuangzi, Laozi, Mozi, Xunzi, Zhu Xi, and Wang Yangming. Students will specifically study the reception of Confucianism in Japan and Korea, how women are perceived by these philosophers and in different East Asian countries, and definitions of religions in the East Asian context.

Course Objectives

After the course, the students will have a firm grasp of various schools of East Asian philosophies. Through writing short essays, posting questions and comments online, doing presentations, and in-class discussions, we will learn to think and write critically.
