Course Description
An exploration of traditional and non-traditional research strategies, going beyond the traditional concepts of quantitative and qualitative research, and including emerging paradigms for design and design research. The course will introduce a range of methods of inquiry (strategies) appropriate to the discipline, but will also explore the various aspects of the process of writing a successful proposal for research.

COURSE OBJECTIVES OR EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES 1.Identify research topics relevant and current through the literature review process in order to determine where new knowledge needs to be created 2.Evaluate the research and experimentation of design and planning research projects through critical analysis 3.Synthesize environmental design and planning research knowledge focused on specific areas of specialization 4.Define the variety of research methodological approaches within an environmental design and planning context 5.Understand the range of quantitative and qualitative research processes appropriate for environmental design and planning research, and how to select the best techniques for specific research questions 6.Develop a clear research plan for an environmental design and/or planning research problem through clear articulation of a research topic and an appropriate and defendable research methodology 7.Create a portfolio of research approaches relevant to the environmental planning and design fields
