Latin American Indigenous Languages I


Course Description

Students will study a less-commonly taught Latin American indigenous language either in the country of origin or at UGA. The course will focus on developing students' cultural and linguistic knowledge of the target language.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Recognize and understand different features of Latin American and Paraguayan culture specific to Guaraní-speaking communities. 2. Recognize basic demographic information (e.g., numbers of speakers, geographic distribution) of Guaraní-speaking communities. 3. Understand and apply rules of pronunciation of Guaraní. 4. Understand and apply rules of word formation, including noun and verb suffixes. 5. Understand and apply rules of sentence formation. 6. Produce and understand basic dialogues in Guaraní using a variety of vocabulary.
