Course Description
Introduction to the many ways in which UGA and the Athens-Clarke County communities are promoting sustainability, including an interdisciplinary breadth and disciplinary depth of sustainability issues. Seminar topics will provide students with a foundational background in sustainability emphasizing interdisciplinary evaluation and solutions to challenges, including climate change, biodiversity, food insecurity, and the built environment.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will show leadership in the seminar by
offering extended presentations about their certificate capstone
project.

Course Objectives
a. Apply systems thinking to real-world problems through knowledge of social, economic, and ecological systems, including limits and interdependence. b. Find sustainable solutions to human-ecosystem challenges. c. Develop interdisciplinary knowledge and an understanding of the interconnectedness of sustainability challenges that transcends academic disciplines. d. Gain a local and global intercultural and intergenerational perspective that nurtures empathy, awareness, and respect. e. Understand the complexity of relationships within and across communities. f. Build an informed, ethical, and scholarly sense of citizenship. g. Learn about ways to get involved in sustainability at UGA and in the Athens-Clarke County area.
Topical Outline
Seminar topics will vary depending on speakers invited and student presentations of capstone work. General themes will revolve around sustainability issues and solutions on campus and in the Athens community.
