Museum Internship


Course Description

Students will work directly with museum staff to gain experience in the museum profession. Through hands-on engagement and reflection, students will obtain a deeper understanding of the field. Approved internships can be established within a wide range of museums and in a variety of locations.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
In addition to a digital presentation required of all students, graduate students will submit a research paper on a topic related to their internship duties.

Non-Traditional Format

Course is repeatable a second time for a completely different internship. Only three hours total may be used towards the Museum Studies Certificate.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Through experiential learning, students in this course will demonstrate an understanding of a specific component of the field of museums.

Topical Outline

  • Through an internship obtained either on or off campus in an approved museum, students will work directly with museum staff, keep weekly journals in which they describe and reflect on their work, meet regularly with the instructor, and create digital presentations using guiding questions about their experience. Students must complete at least 105 internship hours over the course of the semester.
