Provides an understanding of legal and regulatory topics and fosters an appreciation for the role of effective business/government relationships. Topics of study include litigation, alternative dispute resolution, contracts, torts, and intellectual property.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will determine how business-related disputes are resolved considering law, ethics, and the litigation process.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, such as mediation and arbitration, as methods to resolve conflicts outside of traditional litigation.
  • Students will analyze the process of contract formation, enforcement, and remedies for breach of contract in a business context.
  • Students will identify the role of intellectual property (IP) protections (such as copyrights, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets) in the business context.
  • Students will evaluate the legal and ethical implications of potential tort liability in business operations.
  • Students will assess legal obligations and rights within employment relationships.
  • Students will examine the structure, governance, and legal requirements of different forms of business organizations.
