Poetry of the Portuguese-Speaking World


Course Description

Representative poetic texts from Portugal, Brazil, and Lusophone Africa analyzed in their cultural, social, and political contexts. Given in Portuguese.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate Students will be responsible for leading class discussion on selected days and will be required to write a 15-20 page final research paper.

Course Objectives

This course will offer a comprehensive survey of lyric poetry written in Portuguese, from medieval Galician-Portuguese cantigas to the present. Students will read selected works by representative Portuguese, Brazilian and Luso-African poets, as well as critical and theoretical texts examining major issues in the study of poetry in general and of Portuguese lyric tradition in particular. Undergraduate students will write a minimum of three (4-5 pp) critical papers in addition to two exams. Oral presentations in class will be required of both undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students will also write a final research paper (15-20 pp). The course will be taught in Portuguese.
