Student must be a heritage speaker of Spanish who is not a graduate of a secondary institution in a Spanish-speaking country or for whom it has been 5 years or more since graduation from said institution.

Course Objectives
Objectives include: 1. Providing for the specialized needs of heritage speakers. 2. Maximizing writing and reading exercises to raise an advanced level. Expected learning outcomes include: 1. Student will be able to write, read, and speak Spanish at least at the level of Advanced Conversation and Composition. 2. Student will be able to read essays from Hispanic periodicals, short works of fiction, and poetry and deal with them in an advanced spoken or written Spanish. 3. Student will commit fewer written and spoken errors common to heritage speakers. 4. Student will be prepared to succeed in Spanish courses at the 3000, 4000 levels and beyond.

I. Advanced Grammar a) Address common grammar errors of heritage speakers II. Composition a) Description and narration b) Exposition and argumentation III. Reading Comprehension a) Read about topics of factual and more abstract nature b) Learn the basic concepts and terms for the study of literature, film, and other cultural media in Spanish c) Discuss idiomatic and figurative speech IV. Oral Communication and Culture a) Learn about the Hispanic cultural heritage b) Gain awareness and understanding of the Hispanic cultures: e.g., Hispanic identity and communities in the U.S., language variation, geography, history, customs and traditions, current events, music, arts, and food.
