Graduate Internship in Plant Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics


Course Description

Provides work experience with private companies to enhance management and leadership skills in plant breeding, genetics, and genomics. A presentation to PBGG is required upon completion of the internship.

Non-Traditional Format

Internship is formally arranged per existing PBGG guidelines, with approval of the student's major professor. The credit hours available are variable contingent on the amount of time spent on the internship experience (1 credit hour = 120 hours worked).

Course Objectives

• Know what to expect in a job • Learn how a good breeder deals with people, deadlines, stress, etc. • Know what techniques and knowledge is being used, which in turn helps identify knowledge/training gaps in their current training • Find out personal strengths and weaknesses • Networking-gives colleagues and potential employers a chance to get to know the person • Help with career choice • Self confidence that comes from evaluations and feedback given during the internship • Learn materials not available on campus-like some of the breeding software and use of some molecular marker systems • Learn about future employment opportunities • Increase chances of getting their job of choice


Topical Outline

• The student and internship provider will mutually agree to a customized learning experience relevant to plant breeding, genetics, and genomics • The intern is responsible to ensure that they work all the details out in advance, including the necessary documentation, permissions, conflict of interest, and confidentiality agreements • The internship provider gets to set work hours, conditions, etc. • The internship provider provides a stipend and travel expenses • The internship provider will provide a performance evaluation at the end • The intern agrees to abide by their employer's requirements • The intern is cognizant that they are also acting as ambassadors of the IPBGG and are to put forth their very best efforts, ethics, and personal standards while on the internship
