Music in the City


Course Description

In New York City, students will attend jazz performances and Broadway shows, tour recording facilities used for soundtracks, attend a seminar on the American Federation of Musicians, learn about union function, spend individual time with working musicians, and keep a small book on experiences to share with the class.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to schedule a private lesson with a professional musician approved by the course instructor. Graduate students will submit a written report on the lesson experience, discussing the techniques used.

Course Objectives

Upon conclusion of "Music In The City," students should have learned: (1)Preparation skills for various genres of music (2)Effective communication skills towards other musicians and potential contractors and conductors (3)How to prepare for a recording situation (4)The function of the musicians' union (5)How to physically navigate the city (6)How to develop professional relationships in the industry (7)Fundamentals of music business (8)To have a broader understanding of requirements of the professional musician


Topical Outline

Focus will be on requirements of the professional musician. Topics will cover: (1) Listening critically to performances (2) Discussions with musicians covering preparation, techniques used (3) Study of ensemble and solo playing in performances (4) Basic recording techniques (5) Networking skills (6) Instrument equipment used by professionals, e.g., brands, equipment,and repair facilities (7) Ideas students have of their future in the industry
