Course Description
Portfolio management and security analysis. Emphasis is on risk, return, valuation of securities, portfolio theory, and investment performance analysis. Students will research stocks and manage a stock portfolio.

Non-Traditional Format
Includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. The course uses service-learning as the primary pedagogical tool for teaching course objectives. Students will work on a comprehensive project(s) and may be required to spend considerable time outside the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 75- 100% of overall instructional time.

Course Objectives
To understand principles of investing, including risk, return, security analysis, portfolio theory, and investment performance analysis. To gain practical experience through the process of security selection and portfolio management. The curriculum of the course allows students to “practice skills or methods related to their field of study through supervised work in a professional or organizational setting.” The students actively trade a portfolio for the UGA Foundation under the direct supervision of the faculty member teaching the course and the Board of Trustees of the Student Managed Investment Fund. The students report to and have frequent direct communication with the Board of Trustees of the Student Managed Investment Fund a group of investment professionals with extensive industry experience. Through this process, students are responsible for presenting their research to the Board and must effectively communicate, defend, and reflect on the organizational goals of the fund. The students see the outcome of their decisions every day as stock prices go up and down. At the end of the year, the class performs a full review of all positions held and develops an overall assessment of their work, including their performance for the UGA Foundation. The community service aspect of this course mirrors that of the University of Georgia Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to provide support for the teaching, research, public service, and outreach programs of The University of Georgia. the students in this class directly impacts the community, defined as The University of Georgia. The University of Georgia obviously impacts the communities to which it belongs (e.g., the state, the region, and the nation).
