Introduction to Applied Statistics in Human Development and Family Science


Course Description

Foundations for statistical reasoning and applications (e.g., SPSS), with an emphasis on the application of developmental and family research. Students will gain understanding of basic statistical concepts and analytical procedures (e.g., descriptive statistics, statistical significance, standard deviation, correlations, t-tests, cross tabulations, analysis of variance, and regression).

Course Objectives

The course will prepare students to achieve the following objectives: a. Foster an awareness of the issues related to data analysis in family research b. Develop an understanding and mastery in the statistical procedures described above c. Develop skills in formulating and testing family research hypotheses d. Apply statistical analysis methods to the family research questions e. Develop skills of managing data files, selecting appropriate statistics, and performing statistical analysis using SPSS f. Develop skills in interpreting statistical results and writing reports based on American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines. APA style is part of the skill sets that you are expected to achieve in this class. The APA style is very specific but much like when mastering any new language, once you learn it you are able to express yourself more clearly.
