Course Description

Science, technology, and society (STS) related goals and activities in the K through 12 curriculum. Emphasis is placed on STS issues in the state of Georgia.

Non-Traditional Format

This course will be taught 95% or more online. The specific focus within the general topic/title (Science, Technology, and Society) alternates across two years. In odd-numbered years it focuses on STEM Integration (the incorporation of educational objectives related to technology, engineering, and mathematics) in science classrooms, and in even-numbered years the focus of the course is on incorporating consideration of socioscientific issues (the interaction of science with economics, politics, ethics, etc.) in science classrooms.

Course Objectives

Course Goals: (1) To understand and appreciate the complexity of issues within the context and triad of science, technology, and society (STS) with an emphasis on the state of Georgia. (2) To participate and develop units and lessons and assessments in activities that focus on STS (including on site visits and fieldtrips). (3) To develop budget proposals for funding school projects with a focus on STS. Course Outcomes: (1) Contextual learning technology field experience in a local business and investigate the relationship of STS in that area. (2) Unit Plan and Assessment. (3) Develop a unit of lessons that can be integrated into classroom use. (4) Presentation of project and experiences to peers.
