Course Description
Focuses on planning for production. Students will research process, creating a variety of tools used for planning, including budgets, timelines, contracts, case studies, SWOT analysis, user scenarios, schematics, and narrative summaries. Students will leave the course able to create methodologies and plans for innovative project implementation.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to engage research components
and present written papers and/or oral presentations on
historical movements and/or contemporary practices in the topics
of the course. In addition, the work of those enrolled at the
graduate level will require more extensive research and practice
resulting in craft that is more refined and concepts that are
more fully realized.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to introduce students to processes used in the development of new ideas across disciplines. Using historical and new models, students will review different ways that products, businesses, and other cultural objects have been developed throughout time. Historical models of innovation design and entrepreneurship will be explored and tested alongside contemporary models and technologies. Students will leave this course with both a conceptual understanding of multiple models of innovation and the ability to develop their own ideas using these frameworks. Student will be required to present their work and ideas and in both a written and public form. Ideas of cultural adoption will be addressed as well as marketing and testing.
Topical Outline
This course will explore the process and planning of tools and strategies for the creation of a variety of cultural objects, with an emphasis on the process involved in ideation, development and adaption of the venture. It will include a range of tools such as budgets, timelines, contracts, case studies, SWOT analysis, user scenarios, schematics, and narrative summaries. Students will research and discuss these issues over a variety of disciplines. Readings will be assigned that borrow models from a variety of disciplines, including design, business, engineering, and the research sciences. A case study model will be used to review existing ventures and develop new ones. Class time will be divided between lectures, discussions, student, and guest presentations and critiques.
