Course Objectives

This course will serve as an introduction to the tools and techniques of the primary forms of printmaking processes. Students will demonstrate an understanding of these processes through multiple project-based assignments, which will be evaluated based on the student's technical proficiency, creative problem solving and participation/time-management skills. At the conclusion of the semester, each student will submit an organized portfolio of work that evidences both personal progress and material awareness with regard to various printmaking techniques.

Topical Outline

In this course students will simultaneously explore both the material and conceptual consequences of making a print utilizing techniques of relief, intaglio, and screen printing. Each technique introduced will be accompanied by a history of the development of that technique and will include examples of work by artists from that period as well as modern and contemporary practitioners. The print will be examined through a variety of lenses in order to reflect its multifaceted history and function; these will include the print as a democratic medium, the print as historical document, and the print as a tool for artistic experimentation and innovation. Some of the prints created throughout the semester may ultimately become pages for hand-made book projects, allowing the students to view the prints as a resource rather than a finished product. Students will explore alternate applications to create new narratives and discover unforeseen visual poetics. By the end of this course, students will have an increased understanding of most phases of basic printmaking techniques as well as a grasp of the many reasons for and consequences of making a print and/or book.
