Grant Proposal Writing for Nonprofit Organizations


Course Description

The basic knowledge, skills, and practices involved in grant proposal writing for nonprofit organizations. Students will apply what they learn by identifying funding sources and responding to funding opportunities via the development of grant proposals on behalf of existing organizations.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to identify a specific nonprofit organization with which they will engage to complete their assignments. This will entail identifying a minimum of four foundations/funders for which the organization is an eligible applicant. The student will complete a final draft grant proposal for a specific program in that organization using the proposal requirements of one of the six foundations that they identify.

Course Objectives

Research, identify, and approach funding sources related to a nonprofit program. Approach grant seeking, proposal writing, and fundraising positively and confidently. Learn basic facts about grant making and granting agencies. Draft an effective fund raising case statement incorporating all the necessary components. Outline activities and implementation plans that will produce desired program outcomes. Produce a complete draft proposal with introduction, problem statement, objectives, proposed activities, evaluation plan, and justified budget.


Topical Outline

This course will focus on the following topics: I. Researching and identifying potential funding sources II. Writing a full grant proposal in parts as follows: o Abstract o Need statement o Program narrative o Goal(s) and objectives o Work plan, including time and task charting o Resource plan o Evaluation plan o Budget with justifications
