Course Description

This interdisciplinary course provides the exposure to the theory and technologies behind the marriage of the fields of microwave and photonics, as well as its emerging applications in military, civilian, and commercial areas. Students will learn the skills that are essential for designing and characterizing microwave photonic devices and systems.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. Understand the benefit of using photonic technologies to solve challenges in microwave systems. 2. Have a good understanding of existing microwave photonics technologies and prepare for research on its interdisciplinary application. 3. Understand the limitations and challenges of microwave photonic technologies. 4. Characterize microwave photonic systems theoretically and experimentally. 5. Create models of systems and design new solutions to meet technical challenges of today's and future wireless RF systems. 6. Communicate problems and solutions through technical writing and oral communication for a class project.
