Course Description
Candidates will learn how to integrate the performing arts (dance, music, theater) and the visual arts as primary media for communication, inquiry, and engagement among P-5 students. Developing child creative arts through drawing, painting, sculpture, and crafts appropriate for young children will be covered.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Students in the graduate section of these courses will
complete an additional project. These projects include an
Annotated Bibliography (10% of grade): A total of 15 citations,
of which 10 must be peer-reviewed scholarly articles no older
than 10 years prior to the year in which the course is offered;
each annotation should be approximately 1 page. Final Paper (20%
of grade): A 3,000-3,500 word APA-formatted paper in which
candidates will draw from educative experiences as students as
well as their experiences in the field experience for this
course. Candidates will synthesize research findings, their own
experiences, and their aspirations for their own classroom.

• What is creativity? Creativity across the curriculum; planning for a creative curriculum; the creative teacher. Strategies to enhance creativity in the classroom. • Play as learning and a pedagogical strategy to enhance learning in all areas of development. How play looks the same and different in Pre-K-5th across age groups. • Exploring how the arts are utilized in diverse cultures; cultural awareness and the arts; folk art; the arts and nature. • Developmentally Appropriate Practice; Developmentally Appropriate Materials and the Young Child. • Creative expression; the visual arts; the musical arts; the dramatic arts; creative movement. • Arts in the community; children's art museums; agencies that support the arts in the P-5 classroom.
