Outreach and Service-Learning in Applied Economics


Course Description

An overview of outreach and service-learning in applied economics. Students participate in a guided study and practice in developing and implementing applied economics educational programs for the public in local communities across the State of Georgia, which includes identifying needs, establishing objectives, as well as designing and evaluating educational programs in applied economics.

Non-Traditional Format

Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of the project(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 25-50% of overall instructional time.

Course Objectives

This course is designed to facilitate a partnership between the community and the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. Students enrolled in this course will help design and deliver educational programs in applied economics to individuals, small businesses, secondary school students, and not-for-profit organizations. Specific objectives include: 1) Improve students' knowledge of applied economics concepts through hands-on teaching and training experiences in local communities. 2) Provide experiences for students and recipients of educational services that will increase awareness of the usefulness of applied economics concepts and techniques for solving practical individual and group problems related to agriculture, natural resources, and the environment. 3) Develop a sense of community involvement and service for UGA students that will continue after graduation. 4) Enhance the communication and leadership skills of UGA students.


Topical Outline

Student-led teaching and training experiences conducted in the community will focus on: personal and business accounting; small business plans; business advertising and marketing; supply chains; demand forecasting; economic impact analysis; economic development; economic valuation; benefits and costs of natural resource and environmental policies and management.
