The epidemiology of major reproductive and perinatal outcomes, with particular emphasis on current research, controversial issues, methodologic approaches, and public health practice, including policies; programs; and behavioral, screening, and treatment interventions.

Course Objectives

This course is designed for master’s students with interests in reproductive and perinatal health. Upon successfully completing the course, students will be able to: • Evaluate the public health impact of reproductive and perinatal health outcomes • Examine epidemiologic trends in reproductive and perinatal health • Describe biologic and physiologic aspects of human reproduction and reproductive and perinatal health outcomes • Assess the contribution of sociodemographic, behavioral, and biologic risk factors to reproductive and perinatal health outcomes and explain potential mechanisms • Synthesize major concepts of reproductive and perinatal epidemiology, including theories, important outcomes and exposures and their measurement, and methodologic challenges related to research design and interpretation and evaluation of public health interventions • Appraise strengths and limitations of different forms of evidence, tools, and systems used to measure and monitor reproductive and perinatal health • Critically evaluate epidemiologic research and findings about selected reproductive and perinatal health outcomes • Judge economic, social, and political issues influencing development and implementation of public health practice measures that address reproductive and perinatal health • Demonstrate competence in applying epidemiologic findings to public health policies, programs, and controversies
