Course Objectives
This course will allow students to: (1) gain a basic understanding of Christianity as a global religion through course readings and lectures, (2) strengthen critical thinking skills through the examination and discussion of course readings, (3) develop strong writing and analytical skills through course assignments.
Topical Outline
The course may focus on global Christianity from different perspectives depending on the expertise of the instructor. For example, Christianity may be examined as a global religion from the perspective of its historical development beginning in the early Christian period, or from the perspective of its spread across the world during the modern era, or from the perspective of its highly varied cultural expressions today, or from another perspective that illuminates its global dimension. Sample outline: I. Overview of the history of Christianity II. Eastern varieties of Christianity: case studies from Egypt, Syria, Russia, and Ethiopia III. Catholic varieties of Christianity: case studies from Brazil, Mexico, India, and the Philippines IV. Protestant varieties of Christianity: case studies from England, Zimbabwe, South Korea, Indonesia, and the USA V. Pentecostal varieties of Christianity: case studies from Zambia, Sweden, and Papua New Guinea
