Course Objectives
This course is designed to facilitate graduate-level research in the studio arts. Students will be able to identify and articulate their arts research practice and methodology, describe the significance of their materials, and demonstrate enhanced proficiency in their chosen techniques. Readings and discussions will expose students to current issues in the field, and students will be expected to identify correlations to their own research practice, demonstrating understanding by contextualizing their work within contemporary practices through engaged discussions and written responses. Students will be expected to produce writing that is stylistically appropriate and mature, adapting that writing to specific circumstances and audiences in both academic and professional contexts. Students will be expected to engage other students' work, supporting a consistent purpose and point of view while considering and engaging opposing points of view.
Topical Outline
This course will include the development and extension of personal research practice with refined and articulated methodology, one-on-one studio visits with faculty, discussions on contemporary topical issues through reading assignments and gallery visits, engagement with visiting artists, professional practices such as grant writing and job applications, group critiques, critical writing, and professional peer reviews.
