Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide an immersion in leadership theory and consider its implications for the work of individuals, groups, and organizations. We will explore traditional and evolving leadership theory and practice, especially in the context of the “T-Shaped Professional” — a metaphor for professional development that is both deep in a discipline and system and also broad in relational skills that cut across disciplines and systems so professionals are better equipped to collaborate and solve complex problems across multiple boundaries. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. Define leadership and contrast it with management. 2. Describe the historical foundations and theoretical underpinnings of leadership. 3. Explain the major theories and evolutions of leadership theory. 4. Understand and apply leadership theory and practice on multiple levels. 5. Apply the T-Shaped Professional model to their own leadership practice. 6. Assess individual leadership style. 7. Develop a personal leadership philosophy and share it with colleagues. 8. Explain, compare, contrast, and critique leadership, models, and practices. 9. Define the “T-Shaped Professional” and identify their own personal leadership “T.” 10. Practice dialogical communication and understand how to use the tool as a leader. 11. Critically examine leadership’s role in cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture and identify specific strategies that can be applied at multiple levels. 12. Describe and apply leadership interventions, such as coaching, career development, or leadership development. 13. Describe and model major leadership interventions or tools. 14. Understand leadership failures and how to identify and intervene when they occur. 15. Identify ethical dilemmas in leadership and describe strategies for addressing them. 16. Function effectively as both a face-to-face and virtual team member and facilitator.
