Course Objectives

Diversity: Critical reflection of culture (race, ethnicity, culture, gender and class), laws and policies related to services for children with special needs, understanding legal issues (special needs, liability, due process, religion, confidentiality), application of family and community issues, special needs placements, retention, family configurations, critical reflection of field experiences (e.g., examine power, justice, & equity with regard to professional responsibility), activities (inquiry project, portfolio development). Planning: Exploring and expanding resources for planning, ethical considerations for assessment. Organization and management: Critical reflection of organizational and management practices General Education Abilities: Communicate effectively through writing: Assimilate, analyze, and present in written forms, a body of information Compose effective written materials for various academic and professional contexts Produce writing that is stylistically appropriate and mature Critical Thinking: Communicate for academic and professional contexts Support a consistent purpose and point of view Assimilate, analyze, and present a body of information


Topical Outline

Students will formulate a "burning question" related to a personal interest in an issue related to the social context of education that will form the basis of an inquiry project. These questions are framed within the course content regarding one or more of the following topics: Developing as a professional (e.g., reflection, best practices, action research strategies, setting goals for continued professional growth) Beyond the school walls (e.g., home-school connections, social services, community organizations, courts, school health issues) Legal and ethical issues in education (child abuse and neglect, special needs children, religious freedom, student discipline, due process for teachers and students). Other topics: Becoming a professional, organization and time management, beginning the school year, partnerships with families, legal and ethical issues in teaching, African American students and families, revisiting classroom management issues.
