Process of Counseling Psychology Supervision


Course Description

Each student will supervise two master's-level students in Individual Counseling Practicum. The supervisory sessions will be recorded and critiqued in the supervision course. An updated and systematic understanding of the problems of supervision will be accomplished through a review of the literature.

Course Objectives

1. To understand basic clinical supervision terminology and constructs, such as parallel process and reciprocal impact dynamics 2. To become familiar with the theoretical and empirical literature related to the clinical supervision process 3. To understand the similarities and difference between the clinical supervision process and traditional clinical interventions 4. To demonstrate appropriate clinical supervision skills 5. To demonstrate the ability to serve as an evaluator of clinical competencies of supervisees 6. To demonstrate an ability to adhere to professional and ethical standards pertaining to conduct as a clinical supervisor

1. Introduction to basic terminology and psychological constructs that are fundamental components of clinical supervision 2. Analysis of developmental perspectives of clinical supervision 3. Ethical, legal, and professional standards of clinical supervision 4. Study of unique processes inherent in clinical supervision 5. A survey of supervision models and theories 6. Clinical supervision as a reciprocal human growth and development experience 7. Live supervision approaches 9. Group supervision techniques
