Course Objectives
Recognize and define terms used in research. Recognize the major theoretical and philosophical approaches to research. Describe the general factors associated with measuring research outcomes including the reliability and validity of the measuring instruments. Describe the steps and procedures for developing an adequate sampling plan. Interpret and evaluate statistical statements. Recognize the major characteristics of each of the following research approaches: descriptive, correlational, causal- comparative, single subject, true experiments, quasi-experiments, and qualitative research. Recognize the major ethical issues and investigator responsibilities associated with research.
Topical Outline
Independent/dependent variables, internet searches, chain of reasoning activity, calculating effect sizes, types of validity, estimating test reliability, procedures for determining validity, random sampling and selection, transcript activity, fieldnotes, interviewing, survey data, descriptive statistics.
