Course Description

Research or professional internship experiences for the purpose of obtaining practical and applied work experience. A capstone course for non-thesis M.S. students. Project and internship opportunities are identified in individual consultation with the instructor of record. An in-depth paper based on the internship or research project is required.

Course Objectives

The main objective is to immerse the graduate students in the non-thesis MS program in activities relevant to the profession in marine and environmental sciences. Students will work in government agencies, NGOs, businesses or research labs involved in marine- or environment-related activities in order to gain real-world experience. Expected learning outcomes include demonstrating proficiency in: (1) professional activities in the broad area of marine or environmental sciences, and (2) communication in professional settings.


Topical Outline

This course is a capstone course in the MARS non-thesis M.S. program. Topics for appropriate research projects or internships will be discussed and decided with the instructor of record, and will be approved by the program coordinator. Both internship and research projects require a written report and an oral presentation in the Department of Marine Sciences.
