Course Objectives
To provide the non-science-major student with an appreciation of the scientific inquiry into the possibility of extraterrestrial life, with a strong emphasis on the difference between scientific reasoning and speculation.
Topical Outline
Production of the chemical elements via the origin of the Universe and stellar evolution. Interstellar material. Stellar and planetary formation. The development of terrestrial planets especially of the Earth. The origin and evolution of life on the Earth. The search for extraterrestrial life in the Universe. The text will be SEARCH FOR LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE by Goldsmith and Owens. This will be supplemented by readings from current issues of "Astronomy," "Sky and Telescope," "Mercury" and "Scientific American."
