Course Objectives
1. Critically evaluate public perceptions, scholarly research, and scientific theorizing on various forms of deviance; 2. Ascertain the social experiences deviants have in common; 3. Understand the processes underlying the creation of deviance and societal responses to deviance 4. Identify the complex ethical and practical issues associated with social policies regarding the control and treatment of deviant behavior.

Conceptions of deviance Theories and supporting research on the etiology of various types of social deviance including mental disorders, street crime, homosexuality, cults, intimate partner violence, and substance abuse Research on the development, organization, and efficacy of various social control institutions such as mental hospitals, prisons, drug treatment centers, and juvenile detention center
