Hydrogeochemical Characterization of Environmental Field Sites


Course Description

Analysis of soils, sediment, rocks, water for important organic and inorganic contaminants. Chromatography, atomic adsorption, and plasma emission spectroscopy, field sampling and measurements. Quality assurance/quality control, data reporting, computer use in analysis.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to: 1) Develop research questions and evaluate alternative methodologies for conducting research; 2) Synthesize data collected by undergraduates; 3) Perform statistical analysis to evaluate trends and hypotheses; and 4) Organize and conduct Quality Assurance-Control Studies.

Course Objectives

This course emphasizes principles and practical experience in chemical analyses of soils, sediments, rocks, and water, with particular emphasis on environmentally important contaminants such as nutrients and metals. Includes coverage of quality assurance methods in evaluating data quality, and survey of major instrumental methods used in environmental analysis for inorganics. Three-hour weekly lab gives students hands-on experience in environmental analysis, including sampling and analysis from local contaminated areas.
