Perturbation theory and applications of quantum mechanics.

Graduate students must demonstrate understanding of quantum theory at this level prior to enrolling in the 800 level course.

Course Objectives

A student will be expected to have developed a working knowledge (which includes both fluency in the fundamental concepts and problem-solving ability) in the topics listed in the topical outline (item 5).


Topical Outline

a) Angular momentum in quantum mechanics, the hydrogen atom, Zeeman effect b) Electron spin, coupling of two angular momenta, and spin-orbit coupling c) Time independent perturbation theory: Stark effect d) Time dependent perturbation theory and light matter interaction e) Quantum treatment of scattering off an isotropic potential
