United States history from a multiracial perspective. Examines
the roles American peoples of color and European Americans have
played in the making of America. The course focuses on colonial
times through the early twentieth century.

Student Learning Outcomes
- By the end of this course, students will be able to arrive at conclusions about the history of multicultural life in the United States by gathering and weighing evidence, logical argument, and listening to counter argument.
- By the end of this course, students will be able to write stylistically appropriate papers and essays. Students will be able to analyze ideas and evidence, organize their thoughts, and revise and edit their finished essays.
- By the end of this course, students will be able to identify how the multicultural history of America has shaped social and cultural identities, encouraging them to understand diverse worldviews and experiences.
- By the end of this course, students will be able to apply appropriate methodological approaches to their analysis of primary sources and to organize their evidence to show historical continuities and discontinuities.
Topical Outline
- Utilizing lectures, assigned readings, and class discussions, students will examine the roles Native Americans, European Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans, and Asian Americans have played in the formation of the United States.
- The course focuses on the dynamic nature of the cultural contexts--the world views, social, political, and economic institutions--these peoples developed in response to their evolving experiences.
- The course will use both primary documents and secondary sources in its emphasis on recovering the voices of the various racial and ethnic groups constituting the mosaic of American society.
- At the discretion of the instructor, the course may deviate from a general survey format to focus on particular time periods or on cultural topics.
