Course Description
The George Foster Peabody Awards, hosted by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, gives annual awards for broadcasting excellence. This course uses content from the Peabody Archive to consider the medium of television: cultural history, social movements, genres, and an interrogation of what “excellence” means in this medium.

1. To learn about the history and tradition of the George Foster Peabody Awards 2. To achieve a survey knowledge of television history 3. The ability to demonstrate an understanding of television genres and how they have changed over time 4. An ability to interrogate the notion of “excellence” as it applies to television 5. The ability to analyze and discuss popular television shows using history and critical theory
