Cinematography and Visual Language


Course Description

A hands-on course that trains students in the technical and aesthetic aspects of camera and lighting for film, television, and digital-media entertainment. Students are exposed to a variety of lighting and camera styles and the instruments and equipment used to plan and execute them.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will identify the role of the cinematographer in all phases of film production.
  • Students will prepare pre-production materials to support a director’s vision, communicate technical specs with crew, and express a unique aesthetic sensibility in the creation of a short film.
  • Students will demonstrate advanced technical skills with professional camera and lighting equipment.
  • Students will collaborate with others as a member of a camera and grip crew.
  • Students will critique your own and your peers’ media projects with constructive feedback to inform future works/drafts.
