Representation and Identity in Entertainment Media


Course Description

Analysis of the representation of identity (such as intersections of class, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and gender) and socio-cultural implications in entertainment media and popular culture.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Additional article-length, scholarly-research paper or comparable assignment deemed by the instructor to be equivalent in nature.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand theories of identity in media entertainment (television, film, games, digital culture) with a primary focus on the ideological underpinnings, power structures, cultural identities, and social implications of these theories in production and representation.
  • Students will be able to analyze representation as well as media industry forces that influence what and how media are created.
