Fiber Optic Sensors


Course Description

Fiber optic sensors is a promising and fast growing technology. The unique properties of fiber optics solve the bottleneck of electronic sensors. The principle, design, and applications of various fiber optic sensors. Topics including distributed sensors, interferometric sensors, evanescent-field sensors, and wavelength- modulated sensors will be covered.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to: • Transform his/her way of thinking about the fundamentals of photonics and sensing and understand topics in fiber optic sensors. • Have a good understanding of fiber optic sensor technologies and prepare for advanced research on its interdisciplinary application. • Develop a fundamental background to pursue further study in fiber optic sensors, including both device and system design and implementation. • Understand what fundamental photonics theories apply in a sensing situation. • Communicate problems and solutions through technical writing and oral communication for a class project.
