Course Description
There is an increasing demand for high-performance motor drives in home appliances, automotive, and industrial applications. Principles, design, and applications of motor drive systems. Topics including power electronics, advanced torque controls, sensorless controls, permanent magnet synchronous machines, and switched reluctance machines will be covered.

Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, the students should be able to: • Demonstrate their understanding of motor drive technologies and prepare for advanced research on its interdisciplinary application. • Develop a fundamental background to pursue further study in motor drives, including both power electronics and control system design. • Understand the emerging technologies in motor drives. • Communicate problems and solutions through technical writing and oral communication for a class project.
Topical Outline
The topics that will be covered include: a) Overview of electrical machines and drives b) Power electronics converters for motor drives (two-level converters and three-level converters) c) Control of permanent magnet synchronous machines (dq modeling of the machine, efficiency optimization, torque/current control, sensorless control) d) Control of switched reluctance machines (working principles of the machine, nonlinear modeling of the machine, torque ripple reduction schemes, sensorless control) e) Latest research on motor drives
