Course Description
Exploration of artists who use sound in their art or as their art.
Sound is a medium to be explored in its creation and installation.
This course will introduce sound as an expressive and exploratory
tool for studio research practice.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be expected to integrate sound into
advanced research projects. Graduate students will be required
to mount a public installation of a project incorporating sound
as their final project and discuss that work within the
framework of the field of contemporary sound art.

Student learning Outcomes
- Students will develop an understanding of the framework of sound art, from a historical and contemporary perspective.
- Student will demonstrate basic use of field and studio recording equipment.
- Students will become versed in multiple editing platforms and methods.
- Students will apply their understanding of sound as art by creating an object that makes sound and justify its use within an art context.
- Students will integrate the use of sound into their own art practice and/or art piece.
- Students will demonstrate effective visual and audio communication of their artistic ideas, including use of appropriate technology, and will critique works of art that incorporate sound.
- Students will identify points of intersection among sound and different disciplines.
- Students will apply critical thinking skills in deliberative decision-making and problem-solving.
Topical Outline
- Historical and Contemporary Framework for Sound Art: Lectures on historical and contemporary artists who use sound as a means of expression. Students will be expected to research and present artists of importance to their practice. Weekly reading assignments will be given with discussions of the readings.
- Recording: Students will be taught the basics of recording sound. Assignments will be given that require both field and studio recording. Microphone design and placement will also be discussed.
- Basics of Editing: Students will be taught the basics of editing and mixing. Assignments will be given that require students to demonstrate a working knowledge of multiple editing platforms and methods.
- Sound as Art: Students will be asked to create objects that create sound and utilize sound within art objects.
- Sound and the Object: Students will be asked to incorporate sound into existing practices, such as sculptural objects, video projects, installations, or web-based art.
